Lola Akinmade Åkerström: ‘I have my own way of telling stories!’
In this episode, I talk to photographer and author Lola Akinmade Åkerström. Lola is the author of the novel In Every Mirror She’s Black’, about three Black women navigating life in Sweden, all with different results. It’s an arresting, haunting, sexy, and powerful read. It’s a book where Black women express their needs and desires, mess up – and triumph.
OK, we can hear you say why am I talking to an WRITER when ‘The Cipher’ and (de)CIPHERED is about PODCASTS? Well, friends, it’s because STORIES are central to all great podcasts, no matter what the format is. Yup, even that interview, or conversation-style podcast you’re thinking of doing. Knowing what story you want to tell, or have your listeners learn about your guest is everything. Knowing what story you want to tell is central to figuring out that list of questions for your interview and for creating your script. Lola tells stories in pictures and in words. And when you hear her speak, her passion for story is obvious. For these reasons, this interview is excellent inspiration for podcasters – and all creatives, actually.
So enjoy listening to this pod, then visit our IG page to tell us what stories you’d love to tell your audience – or the world, and how you’d love to tell them. Make that promise to yourself in 2022!
